Awana Children's Church

Awana Children's Church is our Sunday School offering. In August 2016, we were the first Norwegian-speaking congregation to adopt the program from the international organization Awana for ages 0-18, and have been at the forefront of the translation work related to this. Parallelly with our church services, we run programs from 2-12 years old. Starting in the fall of 2024, we also established an offer for 8th grade and above, where they are 30 minutes inside the worship service, but at the same time have classes and groups in their own room. This is what we call TREK.

The reason why we run the program from Awana is because we find that it offers something unique both when it comes to Bible education, that the kids should be seen, that the parents themselves have to participate in the children's faith education, and not least a relational approach with lots of play.

0-3 years

At Puggles, there is play and bouncy castles at the beginning and towards the end. Midway there is a handsome collection of fixed elements. Children are allowed to participate actively. There are both soap bubbles, “fishing” and singing with movements. At Puggles, central truths such as that “God has created me” and that “God loves me” are conveyed. The children are followed by the mother/father or another adult. The picture cards used on the collections are given to families a smaller edition of for home use.

4-5yrs

At Cubbies, there's plenty of time for free play at the start. There are cars, train tracks, dolls, playhouses and lots of other nice things to play with. In the devotional, there are puppet shows in which the mascot Teddy often appears. During the assembly, there is also joint play in the gymnasium. Towards the end, the children are divided into smaller groups where they have simple hobby tasks and get to know each other better. The kids will get the Cubbies book with good stories that follow Sunday's theme.

1st-4th grade

Sparks is full of singing, teaching and competition. In the devotional, children get to know important Bible stories and key biblical figures. Afterwards, the children are divided into smaller groups according to which class they attend. In the small groups, the focus is on relationship building, and often there are hobby activities that go on the topic of the day. The last half hour there is play in the gym, focusing on safety, cooperation - and having fun! The children will bring home a book of Bible biographies, which will follow Sunday's theme.

5th-7th grade

At T&T, there is first some time for football games etc. in the “living room” at Fredheim, before they go down to play and fun together in the gym. At the collection there are video clips, lessons and competitions. Teaching at T&T is theme-based and addresses important truths from the Bible. Towards the end, the tweens are divided into boy and girl groups and have familiar toys and conversation. T&T stands for “Faith & Training”, and we make it possible for them to try their hand at various services, such as in the café, as co-leader for younger children, etc. In the T&T handbook, there are cartoons, conversation questions and Bible verses that go on the theme of the week.

8th-10th grade

TREK is at the church service for the first half hour. Alternatively, they can be co-leaders in the gymnasium for T&T this time. Those who want to be in the gym can meet in the “living room” to be handed out a red t-shirt. At 11:30 a.m., the 8th to 10th graders meet in the foyer, and together with a leader they go to Å19 (the office building/next door) where they have fellowship and teaching. TREK “hangs out” together in the den above the Puggle room (round hall) afterwards. Some Sundays the entire TREK is in service. House Church for Tweens

House church for 5th-8th grades

  • The Tweenshouse churches meet every other Wednesday at 18-19. There are two house churches, one for the youngest tweensa and one for the elders. The house churches are a great place to get to know peers. We talk, laugh and pray together. It also takes a bit to bite into. If you want your child to start, please contact Hilde Joy Vestøl, hilde.joy.vestol@fredheimarena.no.
